INTRODUCTION: The Modoc Wildlife Management Area is in the
southwest corner of Randolph County, on S.R. 36. It is 166 acres large. A 20
to 30 acre woods is in the northwest corner, next to S.R. 36. It consists
mostly of grassland areas with scattered trees and shrubs. I found water in
only two places. Behind the old abandon barn is a small sediment pond. In one
of the valleys I found some shallow water, probably from flood run off. This
site does not make the "A" list because it does not have a marsh, river or
lake on it. It should be checked in winter for Short-eared Owl, Northern
Shrike, Northern Harrier, Rough-legged Hawk and other wintering species. In
spring and summer, check for nesting grassland species. This wildlife area
does not have native prairie grass plantings, so opportunities for nesting
grassland species will be limited. This area is hunted in November and
December and should be avoided during this time period.
DIRECTIONS: From the intersection of I-465 and I-70, drive
east on I-70. Veer right on Exit # 137/S.R.1. Turn left (north) on S.R.1. Drive
north on S.R. 1 to S.R. 36. Turn right (east) on S.R. 36. You will pass through
the town of Modoc. Turn right (south) on C.R. 500 W. The Modoc Wildlife
Management Area parking lot is 2/10 of a mile south, on the right (west) side of
the road.
